Laundry detergent is something that every household has and going without it would lead to a very stinky situation. The laundry detergent aisle at your local supermarket is likely very long and more than a little overwhelming! With tons of brands, scents, and types to choose from, it’s impossible to know what the best choice really is. Spoiler alert: the best choice can’t be found in that aisle at all! Making your own natural laundry detergent is the best way to ensure you’re using healthy ingredients, truly cleaning your laundry, and staying conscious of both cost and the environment.
Are Non-Natural Laundry Detergents Really That Bad?
If you’re one of the many people thinking store-bought detergents can’t be that bad, you’re mistaken! Laundry detergents contain lots of harsh chemicals that are bad for your skin, the air, and your overall health. Studies have shown that most detergents found at the store release at least one, if not more than one, toxic or hazardous chemicals when used in your washing machine. It’s not uncommon for those chemicals to be omitted from the ingredient label, so there’s no real way to know what you’re exposing yourself and your family to.
Laundry Detergent Recipe
Making your own laundry soap is easier than you think! The only equipment you’ll need is a cheese grater and a food processor, plus something to store your finished product in. Start with 6 cups of washing soda. Washing soda can be purchased or made on your own with just baking soda and an oven! Then, grate 3 bars of an all-natural bar soap of your choice. Castile soap and coconut oil soap are both great affordable options! Add the grated soap and washing soda to your food processor and pulse until you have a fine powder. Then, pour your product into an airtight container until it’s ready to be used. Yes, it’s really that easy! You can add 100-150 drops of your preferred essential oil to the mixture while it’s in the food processor to get a desired scent, but this isn’t a necessary step.
Take your natural detergent to the next level by adding ½ cup of white vinegar to each load of laundry. This will help dissolve any excess detergent from the clothes.
